The WAHC Jr Gold program is part of a multi-district high school hockey league for boys who have completed the Bantam level and are not playing on their high school team. It is a competitive program, not a recreational league. Jr Gold games are generally played in the metro area and each level has a state tournament.
The Jr Gold program is comprised of three divisions - Junior Gold A, Junior Gold B and 16&Under (16U). The 16U division was created by the Metro Hockey League to allow underclassmen the opportunity to play with others of the same relative age and skill level, while continuing to pursue the goal of playing on high school JV, Varsity or Jr Gold A/B teams.
The JrGold program is a competitive program. To provide the best experience for all players, WAHC may hold tryouts for our JrGold team(s). WAHC works closely with the District Jr Gold Director to help find a place for all players to play.

Per JGHSL RULES & REGULATIONS
Jr. Gold A, B and 16U Team Selection Policy
The local hockey association is in the best position to determine the levels of fielding their Jr. Gold A, Jr. Gold B and 16U teams based on the number of players, age and skill of the players in this group. The goal of all must be to encourage the continued participation in hockey for those who are not participating in the high school program. The following is a criteria for making those decisions.
A. Every Association should strive to have a Jr. Gold A team. Some Associations will need to play at the B level because of numbers, in-creasing/decreasing, but their goal should be to field an A team. Associations are encouraged to field a Jr. Gold A and Jr. Gold B vs. two Jr. Gold B teams and no A team. Fielding two Jr. Gold A teams is not recommended—Jr. Gold A should be the association's most competitive team.
B. Teams should be selected in the following order, with the objective of placing all eligible players on a team:
Jr. Gold A, Jr. Gold B,16 and Under
C. Associations with multiple Jr. Gold B teams should have these teams selected equally.
D. Associations with multiple 16U teams should have these teams selected equally.
For players who are not eligible to register with WAHC Jr Gold/16U or who may be deemed better suited to play in a recreational league, the JGHSL offers a recreational league through MN Hockey. Information and registration links are available here: https://www.minnesotahockey.org/recleague
Player Level | Birthdate Range |
---|---|
Junior Gold 16 | June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2009 |
Junior Gold | June 1, 2005 to May 31, 2009 |
NOTE: Minnesota Hockey and the Junior Gold High School League rules require players born on or before May 31, 2007 to play at the Jr Gold A/B level and not at 16U.
See MN Hockey age guidelines
We are planning to field 1 JR GOLD B team and 1 JrGold 16U team for the 2024-25 season. This is only a projection and may change based on actual JRGOLD registrations and player assessment/tryout evaluations.
The majority of our Jr Gold player registrations come in after the Minnesota High School League's final team cuts (@11/15/2024), so our JRGOLD team status is very fluid - until we have actual registrations in. Team status depends on # of goalies registered, # players registered and availability of coaches.
Please note we work closely and communicate often with our District JrGold representative throughout this tight timeframe - sharing information around actual skater/goalie registrations and team status - to put us in the best position to find a place for all players to play - as the teams for all associations have to come together very quickly.
We thank you in advance for your support, understanding and flexibility.
